Manchester United’s season has risen from the dead as they beat Olympique Lyon 5-4 in extra time to avoid another European collapse.
Man Utd came flying out of the blocks, leveraging their fast start to go up early via Manuel Ugarte via Alejandro Garnacho’s pass.
Lyon did grow into it, particularly via United target Rayan Cherki who tested Andre Onana but the goalkeeper was up to it.
United ended the first half just like they started, with another unlikely goalscorer Diogo Dalot holding off former Ten Hag lieutenant Nicolas Tagliafico to double United’s lead.
Man Utd fans got the worst of deja vu as Lyon flew back to level terms in a classic United European collapse to send the tie to extra time.
Lyon got two more in extra time despite being down to 10 men to cap off an embarrassing result, but United had other ideas, scoring a trio of quick goals via Fernandes, Mainoo, and Maguire to seal a famous win.

Here’s how the players rated-
Man Utd player ratings
Andre Onana – 7
Stepped up when needed as he was calm in the buildup and made some key saves. Not at fault for any goal.
Noussair Mazraoui – 7.5
Got the “pre-hockey assist” for United’s opener as he passed to Fernandes who eventually squared it for Garnacho for Ugarte’s goal. Went off before calamity happened.
Harry Maguire – 8.5
Scored the fifth United goal playing as a striker. Threw his body on the line with abandon in front of everything in a remarkable display.
Leny Yoro – 7
Came forward with adventure and looked threatening but Cherki got the better of him on occasion.
Diogo Dalot – 7.5
Well taken goal full of strength and composure. Marked an overall good display but let down by the result.
Patrick Dorgu – 6
Not lacking in effort even though the end product wasn’t always there. His presence makes a difference.
Casemiro – 7
Earned the penalty for United’s third and assisted Maguire for the fifth. Everything that came before is forgotten.
Manuel Ugarte – 9
A monster display in midfield even if he hadn’t scored the opener. Was all-action and deserved to be on the winning side even though he wasn’t who engineered it.

Bruno Fernandes – 8
Almost scored United’s goal of the season with a Van Persie-esque volley which hit the bar. The hearbeat of the team who deserves so much better.
Alejandro Garnacho – 6.5
Got the best and worst Garnacho in a single game as a brilliant assist was canceled out by maddening decision-making in other instances.
Rasmus Hojlund – 3
Clearly frustrated at his lack of goals and chances. He’s just not ready to play week-in-week-out under such pressure.

Showed some nice touches up front and won some fouls. Great finish to draw United level.

Understated display in a game of panic.
Harry Amass – 6.5
