Manchester United legend Roy Keane pulled no punches towards an Irish comedian after he heard what he said about him on his debut for Scottish side Celtic.

Roy Keane had a legendary career as captain at Manchester United and was a formidable midfield presence in Sir Alex Ferguson’s teams of the past.

Signed from Nottingham Forest in 1993, the 52-year-old excelled as a box-to-box midfielder and had a long-lasting impact during his prolific spell at Old Trafford.

Keane inherited the armband at United after Eric Cantona’s sudden retirement in 1997, with the Irishman captaining his side to a famous treble win in 1999.

Despite his influential presence at Old Trafford, the Irishman’s spell at the Red Devils came to an abrupt end in 2005 after Sir Alex Ferguson axed him from United.

Patrick McDonnell called out Keane at Celtic

Following his exit from Manchester United in 2005, Roy Keane saw out the rest of his illustrious playing career at Glasgow-based Celtic after his free transfer move.

But the Irish hardman’s time at Celtic Park lasted one season and he was reduced to 11 appearances, with the United legend scoring once and registering one assist.

Keane would announce his retirement from football in 2006, with a then-long-standing hip injury hindering his playing spell at Scottish outfit Celtic.

The Sky Sports pundit has admitted that he did have regrets over his spell at Celtic, but Keane was also thrilled that he played for one of the two teams he supported.

Speaking on the Hot Water’s Green Room Podcast (via The Celtic Star), Irish comedian Patrick McDonnell revealed he was present for Keane’s debut at Celtic.

Keane’s first match for Celtic ended in an infamous 2-1 defeat away to Clyde in the Scottish Cup, with Patrick McDonnell calling out the United legend at the time.

“When Roy Keane came to the club, I knew Neil Lennon. Keane’s first match was against Clyde in the cup, and it was this tiny, tiny stadium,” McDonnell said.

“It was freezing. When they came, I was calling him a f*****g Cork G***y and he could hear because it was a tiny pitch.”

Keane’s reaction to McDonnell’s callout

According to McDonnell, Keane was far from thrilled with the callout from him and the former United midfielder made his feelings perfectly clear about it.

McDonnell met with former Celtic player and manager Neil Lennon after the match, only to be ambushed by Keane and for the United legend to put him in his place.

“He went over to Lennon and said ‘Who the f**k is this c**t?’ and Lennon was like ‘I know him, I know him’ and all this,” he continued.

“After the match, Lennon had a match-worn top for me, and he said come and meet me outside the ground.

“I jumped out in front of his car and when I did an arm went round my neck and [he] was choking me.

“All I heard was the voice. ‘Who is f*****g Cork G***y now, ya fat f*****g c**t?’

“Then Lenny is like ‘You need to let him go.’ Then I look over and he’s walking away to his car and I was like holy f**k – the night that was Keane. Tears, etc.”
