Sky Sports pundit Roy Keane revealed that he supported two different clubs growing up and neither one of his two picks were Premier League side Manchester United.

Roy Keane had a legendary career at Old Trafford and the Manchester United legend is widely regarded as one of the best midfielders and captains of all time.

The 52-year-old Irishman arrived at United in 1993 after leaving Nottingham Forest and was an instrumental figure for Sir Alex Ferguson’s teams of the past.

Keane, who has been an ever-present figure in the world of punditry, lifted seven Premier League titles, a Champions League and four FA Cups with United.

Despite being an important presence on the pitch and off it, the Irish hardman’s spell at United came to an abrupt end in 2005 after Ferguson axed him from the club.

Keane, who has recalled his brutal meeting with Ferguson before his departure, signed for Celtic in 2005 and played for the Scottish side until his retirement in 2006.

The ex-United captain had managerial roles with Sunderland and Ipswich Town after his playing career, with Keane recently hinting at his desire to manage one side.

Keane, who dropped huge praise on one current United star, also held assistant manager roles at Aston Villa, Forest and the Republic of Ireland.

Keane says one club is his ‘team’

Despite a legendary career at Old Trafford, Roy Keane did not support Manchester United growing up and was a big fan of two other sides.

Speaking on a Christmas-themed Stick to Football show in 2023, the ex-United midfielder denied he was a Red Devils supporter and Tottenham was his “team.”

Keane staunchly told Ian Wright on The Overlap: “I’m a Spurs fan.

“I played for Man United, but Spurs is my team. Spurs is my team.”

The Sky Sports pundit’s loyalty to Spurs will surprise fans, considering he hasn’t been afraid to use the term ‘Spursy’ as a dig at the Premier League club at times.

However, Keane previously opened up about his connection to Tottenham and admitted he was a big fan of the likes of Glenn Hoddle and Clive Allen growing up.

“Just because I played for Manchester United didn’t mean I was a fan of the team,” he said at a 2015 function for childhood cancer charity Barretstown (via The Daily Mail).

“When I played for Rockmount, one of my teammate’s fathers used to bring me to training and he supported Tottenham.

“That’s where it started, I liked their players, the likes of Glenn Hoddle and Clive Allen.

“But after I’d come back from trial at Nottingham Forest, Spurs offered me a trial.

“I turned it down because Forest had been good me, I liked the club and felt some loyalty to them. I had a soft spot for Spurs, and still do.”

The other team Keane supported

Despite his allegiance to Spurs, Keane supported another club growing up and the former Republic of Ireland captain played for the team in his career.

Keane, who previously opened up on an embarrassing mistake he made in his career, is also a known supporter of Scottish side Celtic.

The ex-Republic of Ireland international had attracted interest from the likes of Everton and Bolton before he signed for Celtic.

Keane was reduced to 10 appearances for Celtic and struggled with injuries, including a then-long-running hip issue when he was a player.

Despite his brief spell at the club, the United legend called Celtic an “iconic and amazing” team and hailed the club’s “amazing” stadium.

“I went to Celtic, an iconic and amazing club,” he said on The Overlap last month.

“The stadium is amazing, but I hadn’t really seen the training ground.

“I’m going back a few years – they have a good one now. I was in the dressing room with Celtic – we got changed at Celtic Park and drove to the ground in our boots and gear.”
