Rising star Vitaly Janelt says Manchester United is his favourite club

It’s no secret that midfield is the on pitch position Manchester United most desperately need to upgrade.

More specifically, United need to sign a defensive midfielder, and while there is a preferred target in Declan Rice, The Mail claim £100 million might not be enough to convince West Ham to sell.

United should consider all options, and it is just worth noting, that one of Brentford’s rising stars at the position would jump at the chance to move to Old Trafford.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Vitaly Janelt said: “I would play the whole career in the Premier League if I can, of course. my favourite club is Manchester United.”

Who is Vitaly Janelt?

Janelt is a player United might just want to monitor at this early stage, as he fits the profile of footballer the club would be looking to recruit.

Janelt is a defensive midfielder, who has been a regular for Brentford in the Premier League this season.

The 23-year-old signed for Brentford in 2020 and started 39 Championship games last season to help the Bees win promotion, scoring four goals and providing three assists.

In eight Premier League appearances this season of which seven were starts, the former German under-21 international has impressed.

He scored his first top flight goal in Brentford’s spirited 3-3 draw against Liverpool, and starred in their 2-0 win over Arsenal.

Janelt plays as a defensive midfielder in Brentford’s preferred 3-5-2 formation and played 77 minutes of the side’s 2-2 pre-season draw at Old Trafford in late July.

Brentford signed him from Bochum, having previously had a spell at RB Leipzig.

Janelt is Brentford’s joint leader in tackles per game this season, averaging 2.5. This is higher than all of United’s midfielders.

Speaking about Janelt last season, Brentford boss Thomas Frank told West London Sport: “I think they call him in German ‘Da Machine’.

“He is top. What a player, what a mentality, works so hard, good on the ball, exactly what I want from a number six, the way I want to play. He just helps the team massively.”

Now, we are not advocating Janelt becoming United’s top transfer target, but he’s a player just worth keeping an eye on in his first season in the Premier League.

United go up against Brentford next month, and Janelt will be motivated to show what he is capable of. It will be his opportunity to show he is a player the club should pay some attention to.
