Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has ranked the signings that Red Devils manager Erik ten Hag made ahead of the 2023-24 Premier League season.

Ten Hag reinforced his United squad last summer with the arrival of several new signings, including a reunion with former Ajax star Andre Onana.

Onana left Inter Milan and signed for United in a deal worth £47.2m, with the Cameroon international succeeding David de Gea as the club’s No 1.

United snapped up Turkey shot-stopper Altay Bayindir from Fenerbahce for £4.3m, with Dean Henderson completing a £20m move to Crystal Palace last summer.

The Red Devils splashed out to sign Mason Mount from Chelsea in a deal worth £60m, while Rasmus Hojlund arrived from Atalanta for a whopping £72m fee.

Ten Hag also brought in Sofyan Amrabat on loan from Serie A side Fiorentina, while Jonny Evans signed a permanent deal after returning to Old Trafford as a free agent.

Sergio Reguilon also arrived at Old Trafford on a season-long loan deal, but the Spanish full-back returned to Tottenham this month after United ended his spell.

Ferdinand on United’s top three signings

Ten Hag has been under fierce criticism this season over United’s run of form, with the Red Devils losing nine of their 20 Premier League matches so far.

United’s signings have been a mixed bag in the current campaign so far, with the likes of Evans establishing himself as a key figure in the heart of defence.

Onana has faced fierce criticism over errors he made in the Champions League against Bayern Munich and Galatasaray, despite keeping his place as No 1.

Speaking on his VIBE with FIVE show, Ferdinand insisted that former United teammate Evans has been Ten Hag’s best signing last summer.

The 45-year-old TNT Sports pundit added that Onana is United’s second-best signing after Evans and his third pick was Denmark striker Hojlund.

“Our best signing [in 2023] has been Jonny Evans,” Ferdinand said.

Ferdinand later added: “Evans, Onana [and] Hojlund. That’s the top three.”

Ferdinand on Bayindir’s time at United

Bayindir hasn’t made an appearance for United this summer, but the former Fenerbahce player could soon have his chance to impress between the sticks.

Onana is set to link up with his Cameroon teammates for the Africa Cup of Nations after United’s Premier League clash with Spurs at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Ten Hag will have to turn to veteran shot-stopper Tom Heaton or Bayindir in the absence of Onana, who made a U-turn on his Cameroon retirement in 2023.

Ferdinand shared his two cents on Bayindir and the United legend is hopeful that the Turkey international will do well during his time at Old Trafford.

“I think he’ll do alright. I hope he does well. He’s a young ‘keeper […],” he said on Rio Ferdinand Presents FIVE.
