Rio Ferdinand is convinced ‘quality’ Man Utd target who has real ‘potential’ is not what Ruben Amorim’s side need ‘right now’

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has suggested that one attacking talent is not the right profile fit for Ruben Amorim’s current needs at Old Trafford.

Ruben Amorim is expected to begin a major summer clearout of the Manchester United first-team squad at the end of the 2024-25 Premier League campaign.

The 40-year-old United manager inherited his current Red Devils squad from Erik ten Hag after he arrived at Old Trafford from Sporting CP last November.

Amorim did see additional support added to his United squad back in the January window after the arrivals of Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils have endured a rough season and have hit major low points in the campaign, including the sacking of Erik ten Hag as United manager.

United only have four Premier League matches remaining in their lacklustre 2024-25 season and the Red Devils languish in 14th place in the league table under Amorim.

The Red Devils have suffered 15 league defeats in the current campaign and United have only managed 10 wins from 34 Premier League fixtures.

Rio Ferdinand is unconvinced by Man Utd bringing in Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap ahead of Napoli striker Victor Osimhen

Liam Delap has been linked with Manchester United and the Red Devils are expected to bring a new striker to Old Trafford in the summer transfer window.

The 22-year-old Ipswich Town striker is under contract until 2029 and Liam Delap has impressed for Kieran McKenna’s men in the current Premier League season.

Delap has netted 12 times and registered two assists in 33 Premier League matches for Ipswich Town, despite his side not avoiding relegation in the 2024-25 campaign.

The United target has a £30m release clause that has become active after Ipswich’s Premier League relegation was confirmed and Chelsea is one club interested in him.

Rio Ferdinand is a big fan of Victor Osimhen and he wants United to sign the Napoli striker, who is currently on loan at Super Lig club outfit Galatasaray.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, the United legend admitted that he is not sure if Delap is the right type of player for the Red Devils to sign for Ruben Amorim.

What did Rio Ferdinand say about Man Utd and Chelsea target Liam Delap amid transfer rumours around the Ipswich Town star?

“Forget Delap’s ability, potential, whatever you want to say about him,” he said on Rio Ferdinand Presents.

“His quality as a player, it’s not about that right now for Man United.

“I think they need experience in there. Someone who knows how to score and someone that these younger guys can learn off.”

Rio Ferdinand added: “[Rasmus] Hojlund needs help. He doesn’t need a competitor.

“You need someone who can come in, who he can go, ‘Listen, take the pressure off me. You’re going to be the main guy. I’m going to learn a little bit in the background and take my chances when they come.’”

United will now travel to Spain and will face Athletic Club in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final clash on Thursday, with kick-off slated for 8pm UK time.
