Recent Manchester United trialist Joseph Olowu signs deal with Doncaster

Manchester United took a look at young defender Joseph Olowu recently.

The 21-year-old had a short spell on trial with United after being released by Arsenal at the end of last season.

Olowu left without being offered a contract and he has signed a deal with Doncaster Rovers until the end of the season.

The defender now has a fresh start, and he’ll get more opportunities to play at Doncaster than he would have at Old Trafford.

United loanee Ethan Galbraith will be one of his new teammates at the League 1 club, where he will also be managed by former Red Devil Richie Wellens.

It’s fair to say his United trial didn’t go exactly to plan; he conceded a penalty in a Premier League 2 clash against Chelsea and gave the ball away for Manchester City’s opener.

They were the only two games he played for United, but clearly his trial at Doncaster has gone better.

Olowu spoke to Doncaster’s official website after making the move and said:

“I’m really excited to get the deal done, it’s been a long summer for me but I’ve kept working in the hope this time would come.

“In football, nothing is guaranteed but I’m coming here with the right mentality and hoping I can make a difference.”

United have plenty of centre-backs and while Olowu might have been worth a gamble on a free, but we will trust the coaching staff’s judgement on this one.

They have taken a look at him and felt he was not what we were looking for, but hopefully Olowu has a successful season in the third tier.
