Reaction as United reportedly renew Saul Niguez interest

This is a transfer rumour we are glad to see. Manchester United are reportedly renewing interest in Saul Niguez.

Spanish newspaper AS report United have a ‘real and very strong’ desire to sign the Atletico Madrid midfielder.

The Times reported back in April that Saul was being considered as replacement for Ander Herrera. United’s interest did not develop beyond that, and no midfielder was signed.

This season has shown up that United lack depth in midfield, especially with Paul Pogba’s ongoing injury absence. It is important the club address this and sign a new midfielder, and if Paul Pogba is sold, it is better for United to already have strengthened the position.

What’s the player’s current situation?

Saul could be very expensive. The Mail reported earlier this year he is valued at around £80 million, even though he has a release clause which is even higher, £130 million.

Conveniently, AS report Atletico are trying to raise £80 million to sign a striker, with Edinson Cavani their top target.

Selling Saul is not their preferred route. The report claims they are going to attempt to sell former Monaco ace Thomas Lemar.

Lemar’s wretched form, no goals and no assists this season, means that could be tricky.

United’s interest in Saul gives them a different opportunity to raise the money.

Ideal fit

Saul is a great fit for what United need right now. He is an all action midfielder similar to Herrera, and is both a scrappy and skilful player who will work tirelessly for Solskjaer’s side and chip in with goals too.

He has 19 caps for Spain, recently starring in their 5-0 victory over Romania, and earlier this season he notched up his 200th La Liga appearance.

At 25, Saul is an ideal age to help lead this young United team and help take them to the next level. His experience could be vital, and he is not too old.

The Mail has also reported United’s interest in Saul but suggest he might be a more likely option this summer than in January.

It is unclear how strongly United intend to push interest in Saul next month, and it may depend how strongly the club plan to push interest in striker Erling Haaland. We’d take one big money deal, and wouldn’t expect a second.

If Saul is the player United are prioritising as the top midfield target, he is an impressive choice. Now to get the deal done…
