Raphael Varane returns to Manchester United raring to go for pre-season

Raphael Varane was all smiles upon his return to Carrington to kickstart his pre-season training at Manchester United.

Almost every Manchester United international player has reported back for pre-season training after their summer break, following their exploits for their respected countries.

The biggest absentee was a certain Cristiano Ronaldo who won’t be returning to Carrington today due to “family reasons”.

The 37-year-old’s absence comes after news broke on Saturday evening that Ronaldo would like to leave the Red Devils if the club received a suitable offer from a Champions League club.

United’s number seven, who was the club’s top scorer last season with 24 goals across all competitions, has a year left on his contract following his return from Juventus last summer.

The club do however have the option of extending the five-time Ballon d’Or’s deal by an additional 12 months.

But despite United reiterating that Ronaldo is not for sale and expect the Portuguese national team captain to form part of our Tour 22 group that is scheduled to depart for Bangkok on Friday, it’s unclear when Ronaldo will return to Carrington.

One man who is back in the building at Carrington is Ronaldo’s former Real Madrid teammate Varane.

The 2018 World Cup winner has posted on Instagram a picture of him back at Carrington with the caption ‘Back to business’.

The 29-year-old was signed from Los Blancos by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last summer in deal which saw United pay an initial £34m.

United’s number 19 struggled in his first season in the Premier League and he suffered from injury setbacks and was playing in a side that was riddled with problems.

But Varane, who was unveiled in front of the Old Trafford faithful for last season’s opening day clash against Leeds United to much adulation, will be hoping to re-establish himself as one of the best centre-backs in Europe this season.

The four-time Champions League winner will be keen to impress new boss Erik ten Hag and rediscover the dominant and assuring form he showed with great regularity during his ten years at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Varane only started 20 Premier League games last season and didn’t feature at all against Liverpool or Manchester City.
