Raphael Varane plays all 90 minutes for France and shuts down Marko Arnautovic
Varane continued his mean defensive streak as France beat Austria 2-0 in the UEFA Nations League.
Last season Varane suffered two injuries on international duty, and he so far appears to have avoided the same fate, thankfully for Manchester United.
Varane completed all 90 minutes for France, with Kylian Mbappe and Olivier Giroud scoring the goals in the UEFA Nations League win.
Varane plays all 90 minutes for France
Varane captained France and was excellent throughout as Les Bleus kept a clean sheet against his former United interim boss.
Ralf Rangnick’s Austria were well beaten, failing to register a single shot on target in the defeat and managing only 39 per cent possession.
Varane completely blunted the threat of Rangnick’s star striker Marko Arnautovic, who was controversially linked with a move to Manchester United last month.
Arnautovic has been in good form for Bologna this season where he is the Serie A top scorer with six goals, so shutting him down was impressive from Varane.
Rangnick substituted Arnautovic after 64 minutes after failing to make an impact.
Varane lined up as part of a three-man defence with Jules Kounde and Benoit Badiashile with France playing a 3-4-1-2 formation.
The Manchester United ace completed 92 per cent of his passes, making 14 ball recoveries, four clearances, and won three out of three aerial duels.
Now we just hope France boss Didier Deschamps gives Varane a rest when they face Denmark on Sunday, one of their World Cup opponents.
This would give the United defender a week’s rest ahead of the Manchester derby, ensuring he is fresh.
