Rangnick says Tariq Lamptey was so dangerous he had to adjust his tactics
There was likely considerable relief among Manchester United’s players when Tariq Lamptey was named on the Brighton substitute’s bench before kick-off last night.
Lamptey is an outstanding talent and has been linked with making a transfer to United. The Mail reported last month the defender is high on Ralf Rangnick’s wish list.
United’s right-back position still remains unclear long-term. Diogo Dalot is first choice for now, but there is still room for improvement.
Lamptey came off the bench in the second half and helped Brighton as they looked to get back into the game, even with 10 men.

Rangnick spoke about Lamptey after the match and admitted the full-back was reason why he made a tactical re-adjustment and played Alex Telles high up the pitch in the latter stages.
Rangnick told the club website: “Their right side with Lamptey was the dangerous side. Lamptey played up front, almost like a right winger for 15 minutes, and that’s why we decided to bring on Alex Telles to support Luke Shaw on that side.”
The Mail‘s report last month claimed Rangnick had identified Lamptey as a potential signing, with Brighton likely to ask around £40 million for the defender.
Rangnick wants United’s full-backs to attack, that is why he has shown a strong preference for Diogo Dalot ahead of Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
Lamptey created one chance against United’s defence in his 30 minutes on the pitch, the same as Dalot managed in 90 for the Red Devils.
While Dalot has improved United, there is still scope to get better. Lamptey, 21, is one dynamic option United will consider.
Another perspective on the switch
United’s official website chose to focus on the tactical switch with a perspective on Alex Telles playing at winger, noting that he ‘added a new string to his bow’ playing at the position.
This is not the first time Telles has ever played at winger, and it may not be the last time he does so for United. His game is well suited to it.
The Brazilian is a good crosser and has an eye for goal, and Rangnick’s tactical adjustment showed his continued willingness to adapt mid-game when situations demand it.
The match was also Telles’ 400th appearance as a professional, of which 37 have now come for Manchester United.
