Manchester United interim boss Ralf Rangnick has revealed that Raphael Varane was struggling with stomach problems in the build-up to last night’s game against Brighton.

The World Cup winner was named in the German’s starting line-up against Graham Potter’s side, but he was replaced on the team sheet by Victor Lindelof after feeling unwell.

Speaking on Varane’s withdrawal via BBC Sport, Rangnick said: “On the way from the hotel after dinner and the team meeting, he had stomach problems.

“We were hoping to get rid of it with medication but he did not feel well and that is why we played with Victor Lindelof instead.”

The former Real Madrid man was set to make his ninth straight start for the Reds, but he was unable to take to the field against the Seagulls.

Hopefully the Frenchman shrugs off his illness in time to face Leeds at Elland Road on Sunday.

United’s number 19 was unveiled at Old Trafford in our opening game of the season which came against Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

In Varane’s absence, Lindelof, who hadn’t featured in the last four games produced a solid performance alongside club captain Harry Maguire.

The captain of the Swedish senior national team has explained when he was told he would be taking Varane’s place in the starting line-up.

Speaking via the club’s website, Lindelof said: “I would say 15 minutes or so before the warm-up but I mean, before every game, even if I am playing or not, I am always preparing in the same way.

“I am always ready for whatever so yeah, today they told me I was going to start late on but, like I said, I’m always ready and I’m happy to help the team.”

“Usually I am not a nervous guy. I always trust my abilities and I know what I can do on the pitch. I prepare the same way even if I am playing or not so I’m always ready to play.”
