Manchester United fans are still celebrating a spectacular derby victory over rivals Manchester City – with Portugal international Rafael Leao impressed too.

There were joyous scenes at The Etihad following Manchester United’s dramatic 2-1 victory away at City.

It was United’s first win away at City since 2021, a game in which fans were not in attendance due to the pandemic.

So this one was special, especially after United conceded 13 goals in three league matches away at City during their time.

Manchester United players celebrate

Manchester United players were thrilled to once again say ‘Manchester is Red’, after winning in City’s backyward.

For Harry Maguire, it was special after missing the FA Cup Final win over City through injury back in May.

Maguire was the captain last time United won at The Etihad, and in that game Bruno Fernandes scored a penalty after Anthony Martial was fouled.

This time around, Bruno Fernandes scored another penalty, keeping his nerve to beat Ederson from the spot after Amad was scythed down inside the box.

Fernandes’ goal was his sixth strike of the season, showing an unrivalled temperament to keep calm in the 88th minute and send the goalkeeper the wrong way.

It was a satisfying win for Fernandes, who posted on Instagram following the win, writing: “A good end to a good week. Thanks for your support as always reds.”

Responses to Fernandes message

AC Milan winger Rafael Leao was among the stars to respond to Bruno Fernandes’ message and congratulate him on United’s victory.

Leao wrote: “Well doneeeee broski”, while there were also messages from Anthony Elanga, Alex Telles and Brandon Williams.

Fernandes and Leao are teammates for the Portugal national team, while former United star Nani also ‘liked’ the club captain’s post.

Former Manchester United star David Beckham had also celebrated United’s win with a post on social media, as did Paul Scholes and Edwin van der Sar.

Beating Manchester City is a moment everyone enjoys – although everybody is at it nowadays.

Ruben Amorim has won more games from City’s last 11 fixtures than Pep Guardiola – also trouncing him while manager of Sporting in early November.
