Lisandro Martinez and Harry Maguire were both on the same wavelength after Manchester United staged a dramatic 2-1 comeback win over rivals Manchester City.
Ruben Amorim’s men are 13th in the Premier League table and the Red Devils are six points adrift from the top four and five points behind Manchester City.
Manchester United had come from behind in their 2-1 victory over Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League on Thursday ahead of their trip to the Etihad on Sunday.
Pep Guardiola’s men took control of the Manchester derby in the first half after Josko Gvardiol broke the deadlock with a header and put City 1-0 up going into the break.
However, United fought back in the match and the Red Devils produced an equaliser in the 88th minute after Bruno Fernandes scored from the spot-kick.
Amad Diallo produced a show-stealing performance at the Etihad and the United star sealed all three points for the Red Devils after netting in the 90th minute.
Martinez and Maguire send messages to Man Utd fans
Manchester United defenders Lisandro Martinez and Harry Maguire both saw out the full 90 minutes of the 2-1 comeback win on the weekend.
Ruben Amorim deployed Harry Maguire as his central defender in the three-man backline and Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt were either side of the ex-United captain.
Maguire earned rave reviews for his performance from United fans, while Martinez equally impressed for the Red Devils against Manchester City.
Martinez took to Instagram after the match and the 26-year-old United centre-back sent a clear-cut message to Red Devils supporters.
“Manchester is red,” he wrote, adding a devil emoji and a heart emoji.
Maguire, much like Martinez, took to social media and told United fans that the Red Devils had the ultimate bragging rights over their crosstown rivals.
“For the fans – Manchester is red,” he posted, adding a red circle and a red heart emoji.
Amorim on Man Utd defence vs Man City
United will now turn their attention to their quarter-final Carabao Cup tie away from home against Tottenham on Thursday evening.
Speaking after the result at the Etihad, Amorim praised England and United star Maguire for his stunning performance in the Manchester derby.
“[Harry] Maguire is perfect when you play with the three defenders,” he said, as per Manchester United’s official website.
“I think in the middle [he] is perfect. Then the way that the striker that they have [Erling Haaland] with the long balls, you need to be really strong and so was perfect for him. Not just Harry, all the guys, defend really well.
“They were really focused and that is the key to play better. I think he did a great job and also his teammates did a great job.”
