With a couple of Manchester United players turning down the chance to leave Old Trafford, it begs the question; how do we define ambition?
As former Denmark international Thomas Gravesen argued when discussing Christian Eriksen’s reluctance to depart the Red Devils, does it betray a lack of ambition staying on the Manchester United bench when there are other clubs out there willing to offer you more regular game time?
Or is it, perhaps, the complete opposite?
Rather than accept offers from Turkey, America or the Middle East, is Eriksen actually showing more ambition by staying put, and fighting for his place at one of planet’s genuine A-list clubs?
Whether he is successful, only time will tell.
But with a minimum of eight Europa League outings on the horizon – and with the EFL and FA Cup to look forward to as well – Eriksen should still have plenty of chances to build upon his miserly return of four minutes of action so far in 2024/25.

Christian Eriksen stays at Manchester United
Ajax CEO Alex Kroes this week confirmed that Eriksen would not be returning to the Johan Cryuff Arena, speaking to the club’s official website.
Belgian giants Anderlecht then removed their name from the frame too, leaving former goalkeeper Silvio Proto a little red-faced.
Proto said on RTL Sport a few days ago that Eriksen would become an Anderlecht player. He’d been ‘told’, the ex-Belgium international revealed, that the veteran playmaker was set to join on loan with Man United paying a percentage of his salary.
But with Anderlecht now insisting that Eriksen will not be on his way to Brussels after all, Proto has been forced into a rather self-deprecating apology.
“Since things are looking bad, it is time for me to make my mea culpa following the non-transfer of Eriksen,” Proto says, via his official X account, while admitting that his wife may have a point when she accuses him of being a little wide of the mark now and again.
“Sorry if (my comments) gave false hope to some people. Apparently, my wife is right!”
Eriksen made his first appearance of the season off the bench against Liverpool on Sunday.
Another injury suffered by Mason Mount pushes the former Inter Milan ace that little bit higher up Erik ten Hag’s pecking order.
Both Casemiro and Antony have also turned down the chance to leave Old Trafford outside of the Premier League transfer window. The Brazilian duo have little interest in moving to Turkey.
Denmark ace turns down MLS and Middle East moves
“There has already been interest from various sides for Christian, but he will stay with United,” Martin Schoots, the 32-year-old’s agent, tells Voetbal International. “There were options in the Arab world, Turkey and the MLS, but those were ruled out in advance because Chris and his family want to stay in western Europe.
“In addition, he is confident that he will get enough playing minutes. Manchester United will play every three days in the coming months, so Eriksen will still be important for United.”
Schoots also insists that speculation over a move to Anderlecht and Ajax had been overblown. Nothing came of those Real Betis links either.
“There has been informal contact with Anderlecht but never more than that. Ajax made inquiries in January, but that was too early at the time and the question was not asked this summer. So that was not an issue,” adds the representative.
“There was another Dutch club that contacted us, but that was not an option.
“It is difficult when you play for one of the three biggest clubs in the world to go to a much smaller competition, especially without Champions League football.”
