PSG contact Zidane amid Pochettino to Manchester United fears

Mauricio Pochettino or Erik Ten Hag? It is a decision which will split the fanbase in the months leading up to a decision, and Manchester United have to get it right.

The first part, in both cases, is establishing whether either are actually available this summer. Ten Hag’s desire remains unclear, while Pochettino’s future seems slightly more open.

Back in November, some reports even suggested Pochettino would jump immediately into the United job (via The Mail), and while this was either premature, or United simply wanted more time to assess options, he could well become available in the summer.

Paris Saint-Germain are making contingency plans, and as long suspected, they are lining up a move for Zinedine Zidane.

Julien Laurens tells ESPN: “PSG have made contact with Zidane in case of Mauricio Pochettino’s departure to Manchester United at the end of the season.”

PSG reportedly believe Zidane gives them a greater chance of convincing Kylian Mbappe to stay, and they are also working to sign Paul Pogba on a free transfer from United. At this stage Pogba’s departure feels somewhat inevitable.

Zidane has had a year out of the game since leaving Real Madrid last summer.

United could get Pochettino if he is top choice

A report last week from French newspaper Le Parisien claimed Manchester United have been in regular contact with Pochettino.

The Mail‘s earlier report claimed Pochettino wants to move back to England, and his experience managing in the Premier League gives him an edge over Erik Ten Hag in terms of making him more of a known quantity.

Pochettino has long been linked with United, going back to his Tottenham days, and the way PSG are cantering towards the Ligue 1 title, 11 points clear already, the end of the season could become a non-event in Paris.

A lot rests on PSG’s Champions League tie against Real Madrid in the last 16. Defeat will make Pochettino’s job security more tenuous, although you could argue he would also become less attractive to United, if Ten Hag’s Ajax win their game and progress to the quarter-finals.

Pochettino feels like he is an achievable target. It never felt like a long-term appointment in Paris, and if United go all out to get him, they can probably get him. Whether the Argentine is number one choice, we will have to wait and see.
