Marcus Rashford started in England’s 6-4 win over France in the third-place playoff, while Kobbie Mainoo was ruled out of the match with an injury.

Thomas Tuchel made seven changes to the England team that suffered a semi-final defeat to Argentina, with just one Manchester United player in the XI versus France.

There was no place for Kobbie Mainoo in the match-day squad due to an ‘injury’, despite not playing a single minute of football throughout the tournament.

Rashford gave a good account of himself with an impressive performance on the left flank for the Three Lions.

How Marcus Rashford performed against France

In what was an embarrassing night for France, Rashford started the game in a lively manner on the left flank. The United winger showed early signs that he was going to enjoy his battle with Chelsea’s Malo Gusto when he delivered a dangerous cross into the box just two minutes in, but France dealt with it.

With seven minutes on the clock, Rashford attempted his first effort on goal before Gusto blocked it for a corner.

Rashford tested Mike Maignan from distance after pulling off a wonderful piece of skill outside the box to nutmeg his opposing player.

Shortly after that, a comedy of errors led to England’s third goal. The move started with Rashford running through on goal before being denied by Maignan from a one-v-one situation. Ultimately, France failed to deal with it, as the United academy graduate registered an assist by eventually teeing up Bukayo Saka.

Rashford was substituted at half-time and replaced by Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins.

At the time of Rashford’s substitution, no player on the pitch had created more chances than the 28-year-old (3).

Rashford will now go on holiday as England’s 2026 World Cup campaign has come to an end. He is expected to return to Carrington for pre-season training following a season-long loan at Barcelona.
