The World Cup final is right around the corner and Donald Trump is set to be there, but the United States president’s history with Manchester United is a real eye-catcher.
Donald Trump will hand out the World Cup trophy to the winner of Spain vs Argentina from Sunday’s final at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
The 80-year-old US president, who is often viewed as a polarising figure, has not been in attendance for World Cup matches amid his country’s co-hosting duties.
Trump is set to come to the forefront of the football world this weekend, but he has been connected to it in different ways, including through Manchester United.

US president Donald Trump once hinted that his allegiance is with Manchester United for one reason alone
After he became the United States president for the first time in 2016, Donald Trump would later cross paths with outspoken broadcaster Piers Morgan in an interview.
Piers Morgan, who won The Celebrity Apprentice under Trump in 2008, presented an Arsenal shirt to the US president, whose son Barron Trump is a Gunners fan.
“That’s beautiful, I have a son who does love this sport,” he said to Morgan on ITV Sport, as per BeanymanSports.
Responding to Trump, Morgan asked: “And he loves Arsenal, right?”
Morgan then added: “Are you an Arsenal fan, too?”
Trump did not say that he supported Manchester United outright, but he said that the Old Trafford outfit was important to him because of his connection to his “friend.”
“Not particularly, no,” he responded.
“I have a friend who owns Manchester United.”

Donald Trump’s notable ties to Edward ‘Ed’ Glazer are why the US president likes Man Utd amid the Glazer family’s ownership
Trump’s ties to the Premier League club stem from his dynamic with the contentious Glazer family, who own the controlling stake in Man Utd.
Ed Glazer, who is a co-chairman of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is the brother of Joel Glazer, who has been a co-owner of United since the polarising 2005 takeover of the club.
According to City AM in 2016, Ed Glazer showed his support for Trump’s first presidential run by donating $38,800 to the Republican Party in the US.
Ed Glazer took up a role as a director at Man Utd alongside his five siblings — Avram, Joel, Bryan, Darcie and Kevin — as part of the club’s board of directors.
The American billionaire businessman still has a controlling stake and voting rights at the Premier League club amid Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s co-ownership of Man Utd.
