Premier League striker claims Sir Alex Ferguson phone calls, long after Manchester United sold him

Manchester United strikers are struggling for goals this season whilst one former Old Trafford talent continues to find the net.

Manchester United are heading towards a summer transfer window in which more money will need to be spent on strikers.

Rasmus Hojlund was a big-money signing in 2023 but has now gone 18 games without a goal in all competitions.

Hojlund’s form is causing concern in Denmark with the striker looking completely bereft of confidence in the United attack.

United also signed Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna last summer and the Dutchman has only managed three goals in 27 Premier League games.

Ruben Amorim now prefers Zirkzee as a number 10, meaning United may look to sign another striker this summer.

Danny Welbeck on Sir Alex Ferguson

United’s inability to find a goalscorer may sting a little when two big-money forwards are being outscored by a man United sold more than a decade ago.

Danny Welbeck left United to join Arsenal in 2014, leaving his boyhood club in search of first-team chances.

Injuries plagued Welbeck at Arsenal and Watford, but he has really found a home for himself at Brighton and Hove Albion.

Now 34, Welbeck has hit eight goals in 25 games this season – including a fine finish against Newcastle United in the FA Cup last weekend.

Welbeck is ageing like a fine wine on the South Coast and he has now commented on Sir Alex Ferguson – the man who gave him his United debut.

Welbeck sent a message about Ferguson when Brighton met United in January, admitting that it was great to see him again.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Welbeck has now claimed that he and Ferguson talk on the phone ‘now and then’, many years since last working together.

Welbeck noted that Ferguson’s ‘winning mentality’ was passed down to the United academy with Ferguson ‘always watching’ the top young players at the club.

“It was really good to see him,” said Welbeck.

“We speak on the phone sometimes, now and then, but it’s a while since I’d actually seen him, so it was great to see him before the United game.

“Him popping in and seeing the academy team play, whether it be in a game or if it’s in a training session, you know what he’s always watching.

“He definitely had that winning mentality and he passed that down right through to the academy,” he added.

Manchester United considered Welbeck return

Welbeck is shining away from United and some feel that he shouldn’t have been let go in the first place.

Gary Neville would love Welbeck at United, suggesting that he was ‘let go too quickly’ and has been ‘destroying defences’ for Brighton.

Wayne Rooney wishes Welbeck was still a United player too, praising his ‘fantastic’ season for the Seagulls.

United did actually consider signing Welbeck last summer but there was to be no emotional return for the veteran striker.

The ship may have sailed now but many United fans still love seeing Welbeck shine having been a popular figure at Old Trafford.
