Brighton striker Danny Welbeck shared an emotionally charged message on social media after he crossed paths with ex-Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Fabian Hurzeler’s men arrived at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon and Brighton inflicted a 3-1 defeat on Manchester United in the Premier League.

Brighton stunned United by taking the lead in the fifth minute through Yankuba Minteh before the Red Devils pulled level thanks to Bruno Fernandes’ spot-kick.

However, the Seagulls restored their advantage in the second half after Kaoru Mitoma netted against United in the 60th minute at Old Trafford.

Andre Onana dropped a disappointing performance for the Red Devils and the United shot-stopper’s howler allowed Georginio Rutter to score Brighton’s third.

Welbeck’s tribute to Ferguson

Manchester United are 13th in the Premier League table after their first defeat of 2025 under manager Ruben Amorim.

The Red Devils have played 22 matches in the 2024-25 campaign and United have only managed seven wins amid their dismal season so far.

Ruben Amorim’s men are 10 points above the relegation zone and United are now 14 points adrift from the Premier League top four in the current campaign.

Ahead of Brighton’s 3-1 win at Old Trafford, United paid tribute to Red Devils legend Denis Law after he died last Friday at the age of 84.

Sir Alex Ferguson laid a wreath during the pre-match tributes for Denis Law and the former United manager even crossed paths with Amorim before taking his seat.

The 83-year-old also shared a touching reunion on the pitch with Danny Welbeck, who came through the United youth academy and made his debut under Ferguson.

Welbeck was part of the last United team to win the Premier League title under Ferguson before the Red Devils legend retired as a manager in 2013.

The 34-year-old ex-United and England star posted a fitting tribute to Ferguson amid his message celebrating Brighton’s victory over his former side.

“Good to see the boss,” he wrote on Instagram.

Welbeck continued: “Big 3 points. Onto the next one. Up The Albion.”

Amorim on Man Utd legend Ferguson

Ruben Amorim admitted that he has kept in touch with Ferguson since his arrival at Old Trafford and the legendary ex-United manager is a supportive figure for him.

“I speak with Sir Alex several times,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live, as per Manchester United’s official website.

“I try to call him to keep being positive.

“It’s really good because I feel the history of the club but it’s really hard, as they did such a good job, to be the guy leading the team at this moment.

“It’s really hard but we have to believe.”
