Manchester United are looking to appoint a new manager after sacking Erik ten Hag and Sporting’s Ruben Amorim appears to be the top target.

Manchester United sacked Erik ten Hag on Monday morning and the search for his successor is now well and truly on following Sunday’s 2-1 defeat at West Ham United.

VAR’s explanation for West Ham’s late penalty will have been little comfort to Ten Hag, who has now lost his job in the United dugout.

Losing to West Ham was not the sole reason for Ten Hag’s exit though.

United sit 14th in the Premier League table and have yet to win in the Europa League this season; neither are acceptable at Old Trafford.

Ineos are now seeking their first managerial appointment at United and one target appears to be leading the way.

Portuguese media share Ruben Amorim salary offer at Manchester United

Reports on Monday suggested that Ruben Amorim is wanted – and that Amorim has verbally agreed terms with United.

The Sporting boss has become one of the top young managers in the game having won two league titles in Portugal.

Still not even 40, the Portuguese coach has emerged as United’s number one target but compensation must be thrashed out amid confusion over Amorim’s release clause at Sporting.

A Bola in Portugal now claim that United are offering Amorim a salary of up to €8million (£6.7million).

That is a huge increase on Amorim’s current salary at Sporting as he currently earns just shy of €3million-a-year (£2.5million).

Few could blame Amorim for being attracted by that kind of pay rise and the opportunity to lead United to glory – just as he has with Sporting.

Ruben Amorim salary compared to Erik ten Hag

That offer to Amorim will leave United fans wondering how it compares to Ten Hag’s salary at United.

We spoke to Football finance expert Adam Williams in September to gauge Ten Hag’s salary and a potential pay-off.

Ten Hag’s United salary was £6.75million at the time of his exit – but only after his salary was reduced.

Ten Hag was earning £9million-a-year but failure to qualify for the Champions League last season resulted in a 25% reduction.

United are now seemingly offering Amorim the same salary as Ten Hag departed on, though it remains to be seen whether he would earn more if he guides United back into the Champions League.
