Pundit Paul Scholes has identified two standout managers who are his preferred picks ahead of Michael Carrick for the vacant Manchester United head coach role.

Michael Carrick has become one of the favourites to succeed Ruben Amorim on a permanent basis at Old Trafford after the impact of his interim head coach reign.

The 44-year-old Manchester United legend has led the Red Devils back to the Champions League and the club are poised to finish third in the Premier League.

Carrick is not the only person to have been connected with the United manager role, with the likes of Luis Enrique, Thomas Tuchel, Andoni Iraola and Oliver Glasner all linked in recent months.

Paul Scholes wants Luis Enrique and Thomas Tuchel at Man Utd, but he already knows the key issue

Thomas Tuchel was linked with Manchester United in the past and the England manager appeared on the radar again after Ruben Amorim was sacked.

However, the 52-year-old Three Lions boss shut down speculation over a move to Old Trafford after inking a new deal with England ahead of the World Cup.

Luis Enrique has had his name attached to United as well, but Paris Saint-Germain are keen to tie the former Barcelona and Spain manager down to a new contract.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Paul Scholes insisted that PSG boss Enrique and England manager Tuchel are his preferred managerial picks ahead of Michael Carrick.

“Look, if there was a Thomas Tuchel or a Luis Enrique available, which I don’t think there is, then I’d be sceptical of Michael taking it, but I don’t think they are available, so I think Michael is probably the best candidate for it now,” he said.

Paul Scholes does expect Michael Carrick to be named the next permanent Man Utd manager

Scholes thinks United will likely roll the dice with Carrick being appointed permanently, but he has his reservations after the reign of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

“Yeah, I think he’s probably done enough. I think the question would be what else is out there,” he explained.

“I don’t mind that the club are taking a bit of time.

“I think last time they were [a] little bit emotional with the Ole decision and it, in the end, didn’t quite work out. It still did well for a while, don’t get me wrong.”

Carrick has overseen 10 Premier League wins from 15 matches in the second half of the 2025-26 campaign, with only two league fixtures remaining in his interim reign.
