Paul Scholes is convinced one Man Utd star will ‘think’ back on major seven-word message after Liverpool draw

Paul Scholes believes that a Manchester United star will one day look back on the “wrong decision” that he made in the 2-2 draw against Liverpool at Anfield.

Manchester United bounced back from their 2-0 Premier League defeat to Newcastle at Old Trafford with a superb performance against rivals Anfield.

Neither Liverpool nor United could break the deadlock in the first half of Sunday’s thrilling contest before the Red Devils made the breakthrough after the break.

Lisandro Martinez fired United into the lead with a stunning finish before Cody Gakpo cancelled out the Red Devils’ second-half opener only seven minutes later.

United were then dealt a major blow after Liverpool were awarded a penalty and Mohamed Salah converted past Andre Onana to put the Reds 2-1 up at Anfield.

However, Ruben Amorim’s men fought back and Amad Diallo netted United’s all-important equaliser to seal the Red Devils’ first Premier League point of 2025.

Scholes on Man Utd star’s moment vs Liverpool

Manchester United were unfortunate not to snatch all three Premier League points against league leaders Liverpool on Sunday evening.

Joshua Zirkzee came off the bench late in the second half and the Dutch forward was played through by Bruno Fernandes deep into injury time.

The 23-year-old United striker was out on the right in the Liverpool box and Joshua Zirkzee opted to square the ball to an unmarked Harry Maguire in the centre.

However, Harry Maguire proceeded to blaze his shot over the crossbar and United were left to rue their missed opportunity at the full-time whistle.

Ruben Amorim defended Zirkzee’s decision-making during the late chance, but Paul Scholes felt that the Netherlands international missed his ‘hero moment’ at United.

“It could have been [a huge moment] for him,” Scholes said on Premier League Productions, as per the Metro.

“We were talking before about Diego Forlan, he was in a very similar position. Forlan couldn’t score a goal for United and he scores there and he’s a big hero forever.

“It was that end, that side of the pitch and it’s the only thing he’s thought about, scoring the winning goal at Anfield.”

Scholes on what Zirkzee might think

Joshua Zirkzee has faced major criticism since his 2024 summer move from Bologna and the Netherlands striker had a tough time against Newcastle in December.

The former Bologna man was hooked off in the first half of the 2-0 Premier League defeat and Zirkzee was even met with boos from United fans as he left the pitch.

Scholes suggested that Zirkzee will look back on the key moment during the Liverpool match and he will believe that he made the “wrong decision” to pass.

“Zirkzee had a great chance to do it,” he added.

“He’ll probably look back and think, ‘Well, I probably made the wrong decision,’ but he’s a player lacking in confidence.

“He has been dragged off after half an hour [against Newcastle], his chin is on the floor and he comes on at Anfield in a really difficult place.

“He gets in a really good position, great run, great ball into him and you think, ‘Come on, this is it for you,’ and he didn’t quite take it.

“But I’m hoping that there’s opportunities in the future where he will probably change his mind.”
