Bruno Fernandes put in his best performance of the season during Manchester United’s draw to Liverpool.
The Manchester United captain will not look back proudly on the first half of the season, but Bruno Fernandes started 2025 with a bang.
Fernandes enjoyed a purple patch under Ruud van Nistelrooy, but overall his performances this season have been well below his usual standards. Fernandes has faced three red cards already in 2024/25 and his attacking output has been down compared to previous seasons.
But at Anfield, United’s Portuguese magnifico reminded fans exactly why he has picked up that nickname. He ran the show against Liverpool to a point that even Arne Slot praised Fernandes after the full-time whistle.
United fans raved about Fernandes on social media and shortly after they voted Fernandes as the man of the match.

Bruno Fernandes ‘frustrated’ after Man United draw to Liverpool
The Red Devils were huge underdogs heading into Sunday’s match, but it was United who ended up disappointed at the draw more than the home side.
Fernandes and Amorim were upset at the result and questioned why United were unable to produce similar performances on a regular basis.
In his post-match comments, Fernandes told Sky Sports: “We’ve been fairly criticised because the position in the table says it all. We can’t be happy with a draw because we need points more than they need points.
“I think it’s a fair result, both teams played really good football. But we can’t be satisfied. I’m really upset because if we can show this against Liverpool, why can’t we do this every week?
“I’m frustrated because finally I put in a proper performance, but we need to do this every week. I wasn’t worried about today, I’m more worried about Southampton. We know how tough it is to play against Liverpool. Today was about putting effort into the game, playing with passion. It can’t stop here.”
Paul Scholes in complete agreement with Bruno Fernandes
Earlier this season, Scholes was critical of Fernandes, insisting he causes “chaos” in midfield with how he plays.
However, the United legend was much more pleased with how Fernandes and the rest of United’s midfield played against Liverpool.
Scholes was impressed by Manuel Ugarte and argued that the performance against Liverpool was even better than the 2-1 victory over Manchester City last month.
Speaking to Premier League productions, Scholes said: “The middle of the pitch is the most important area, and today we knew United had half a chance with Mainoo and Ugarte.
“Fernandes is right – that’s a proper performance.
“To go to Anfield and go toe-to-toe with the best team. I take more from this performance than the win at Man City; this is the blueprint and how they have to go forward.”
