Paul Scholes revealed that two Manchester United legends would not be afraid of “arguing” with Sir Alex Ferguson during his legendary career at Old Trafford.

The 50-year-old former Manchester United midfielder came through the youth academy and spent his two spells at Old Trafford under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Paul Scholes rose to prominence as one of the famed ‘Class of ‘92’ breakout stars and made a name for himself in the United first team during the 1990s.

The United legend became a linchpin midfield influence during his time at the Premier League club across his two separate spells at the Red Devils.

Scholes made a whopping 714 appearances for United and the former Red Devils star scored an impressive 153 times for the Premier League club.

The former England international lifted 11 Premier League titles, two Champions League trophies, three FA Cups and two League Cups with United.

Scholes initially retired from football in 2011 before he made a U-turn and made his sensational return to Old Trafford in 2012.

The ex-Three Lions midfielder was part of the last United team to win the Premier League title in the 2012-13 campaign before he retired in 2013.

Scholes stood up to Ferguson once

Paul Scholes admitted that he “answered back” to Sir Alex Ferguson on one occasion, but the Manchester United legend claimed he was in the “wrong really.”

The footballer-turned-pundit came off the bench in an away match against Newcastle and Scholes attempted a backheel on the halfway line.

However, Scholes’ backheel failed to come off in the way that he had hoped and the former United midfielder later saw Alan Shearer score from the mistake.

The ex-England and United star felt that he was “merited” to stand up to Ferguson, despite Alan Shearer scoring for Newcastle in the match.

“It was the first time I ever answered back,” Scholes told Savage Social on BBC Radio 5 Live in 2020.

“It was never something I would ever do because I’d seen people answer back to him, I’d seen Incey [Paul Ince] answer back and [Peter] Schmeichel – and it doesn’t end well. Trust me.

“I just kept answering back to him. I was wrong really. That was never me. Whenever I was getting a ‘b*****king, I just took it and took it and took it.

“But for this one occasion I thought it was merited, I thought I’d made a little bit of a difference to the team, got us back into the game really.”

Scholes singles out two Man Utd legends

Scholes insisted that not all of his former United teammates were like him when Ferguson would put them on blast.

He revealed that fellow Class of ’92 stars Ryan Giggs and David Beckham wouldn’t be afraid to make their feelings heard to former manager Ferguson.

Scholes claimed that David Beckham would “always have a pop back” at Ferguson, while Ryan Giggs argued with the Scotsman whether he was “right or wrong.”

“Some people loved arguing with him,” he added.

“Giggsy is one. He can’t keep his mouth shut, whether he’s right or wrong it doesn’t matter.

“Beckham was the same. He’d always have a pop back but I’d never say a word.”
