Manchester United legend Paul Scholes was critical of the way Marcus Rashford chose to leave the club last summer.
After being frozen out of the Manchester United squad by Ruben Amorim and loaned out to Aston Villa, Marcus Rashford joined Barcelona on loan for the 2025/26 season.
It was a decision that was met with plenty of criticism. Paul Scholes called Rashford a “disgrace” for how he left the club, with the legendary midfielder questioning his attitude and mentality.

Since leaving, Rashford has impressed for Barcelona, and a permanent move appears to be on the cards in 2026 with a £26m buy option attached to his deal.
Paul Scholes underestimated Marcus Rashford treatment
After making his move to Spain, Rashford criticised the environment at United, describing it as “inconsistent”.
His comments were met with more criticism, including from Paul Scholes. But the United legend believes he may have underestimated how Rashford was treated at Old Trafford.
Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, Scholes said: “I was very critical of Marcus early in the season. I’m not changing my mind, but I think it’s done him the world of good, going to Barcelona.

“I didn’t like the way he behaved. I said that on air, but looking back now, and you look at him, it looks like he’s having a bit of fun there. And again, maybe I underestimated how he was treated at the club.
“People just not knowing young players and what young players mean to Manchester United.”
Marcus Rashford relationship with Man United became toxic
Back in December, Scholes said United needed to sell Rashford after his staggering drop in form.
Rashford’s body language was becoming a major source of frustration for fans as well as Amorim, who was not afraid to criticise his poor effort in training.
Rio Ferdinand believes Rashford was overly criticised at United, and it led to the player becoming detached from the club he grew up in.
Ultimately, a divorce was needed for both United and Rashford, and his move to Barcelona ended up being a win for everyone involved.
A return to Old Trafford appears impossible, and United have already moved on from Rashford.
