Patrick Dorgu claims his season turned around in one game under Amorim, Carrick benefited later

Patrick Dorgu has left the Man Utd fans salivating over his prospects next season after glimpses of world-class potential, and it took one game to turn it all around.

Barring injuries, Patrick Dorgu was well on his way to becoming the first name on the teamsheet at Man Utd this season.

Michael Carrick used him further forward, where Dorgu scored the club’s Goal of the Season against Arsenal.

However, the Dane has claimed that his season actually turned around in one game under Ruben Amorim.

Patrick Dorgu identifies a turnaround moment at Man Utd

Dorgu might have been Amorim’s first signing at Old Trafford, but there was a lingering feeling that he didn’t use him well.

The issues were compounded when Dorgu performed well for Denmark, which infuriated Amorim, leading to his sensational comments about feeling ‘anxiety’ when Dorgu has the ball.

The player hit back on those comments since then, but has now claimed that his season turned around under the same manager.

Speaking on the Inside Carrington podcast, Dorgu said that he felt his confidence flowing at Man Utd after he scored the winner against Newcastle United.

United won that game 1-0 after Amorim changed his formation, with Dorgu unleashed further forward.

Dorgu said: “I think the Newcastle game was a big turnaround in the season for me. It was a big hit for me to get injured in the Arsenal game but really happy to see the team do really well since I’ve been injured as well.”

Michael Carrick didn’t try to fix what wasn’t broken

It sums up Amorim’s time at Old Trafford that even when he stumbled upon a winning formula, he changed it back because he couldn’t move from his idea.

Carrick came in and continued the Dorgu experiment by fielding him further forward, and benefitted immensely.

The Dane’s ability to run directly and hold the width provides a throwback option on the wing in an era where inside forwards have been all too common.

United’s two best wins came with Dorgu on the left wing (vs Arsenal and Man City), and it’s tantalising to think what he could do next season.

Dorgu’s turnaround moment came under Amorim, but it was purely by chance. Carrick seized that opening and turned the Dane into a valuable asset.
