Manchester United winger Antony has been named in the BBC team of the week after the victory against Wolves.
Manchester United took a step towards Champions League qualification this week with a 2-0 win at home to Wolves.
Anthony Martial and Alejandro Garnacho applied the finishing touches, after the work of United’s creative players carved out chance after chance.
Antony, Bruno Fernandes and Jadon Sancho created 11 chances, and with a world class striker in tow, United would have won more comprehensively.
Antony named in BBC team of the week
Manchester United fans named Bruno Fernandes as the man of the match against Wolves. But it was a different player selected in the BBC team of the week.
Garth Crooks picked out Antony for praise, telling BBC Sport: “The star of the show was Antony who looked electric on the day. The Brazilian’s ability is not in question.”
He went on to question Antony’s temperament after seeing him lose his cool in recent games, pointing out that he cannot afford to do so at Champions League level.
And that’s a fair point, but let’s focus on the positive here. Antony has been frequently dragged by pundits, mostly unfairly, focusing on the high price United paid for him.
But he has been an important contributor to this team and is missed when he is not playing. For a debut season, Antony has made a solid contribution and we expect him to get better.
It is nice to see him picking up plaudits. For his hard work across the season it is richly deserved – even if we think Fernandes should have been named in the team of the week too.
