Manchester United are on the verge of appointing a new manager after Sporting confirmed a deal for Ruben Amorim is now close.
Manchester United sacked Erik ten Hag on Monday morning and are wasting no time in finding his successor.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe and co have quickly zoned in on Ruben Amorim as their top target for the Old Trafford hot seat.
Reports on Monday suggested that Amorim had verbally agreed a deal with United – and the deal appears to be moving quickly.
Sporting have confirmed that United are close to landing Amorim, releasing a statement on United’s intention to pay Amorim’s release clause.
Confusion has surrounded Amorim’s release clause at Sporting but United seem ready to pay up and bring the Portuguese coach to Manchester.

Nani on Manchester United target Ruben Amorim
Amorim is closing in on a move to Old Trafford and he would arrive with ringing endorsements from his compatriots.
Jose Mourinho has shared his admiration for Amorim having been impressed with his work at Sporting.
United captain Bruno Fernandes has also praised Amorim’s trophy wins at Sporting, the club Fernandes left for United in 2020.
Another former Sporting star turned out for United in Nani, who ended up back at Sporting in the 2014-15 season and then in 2018.
Nani was never coached by Amorim at Sporting but played 12 times alongside the former midfielder in his playing days.
Nani joined hometown club Estrela Amadora over the summer but has kept a close eye on Sporting and Amorim.
As quoted by Record earlier this year, Nani praised Amorim for displaying one great quality – leadership.
Nani feels that Amorim has a ‘strong personality’ and a great connection with his players, believing that the potential United boss has built up that rapport through ‘good leadership’.
“When he arrived at Sporting, the secret to his success was his leadership, you can see it in his attitude. I never attended a talk or a training session with him, but you could feel that he has a strong personality and a connection with the players. That comes from good leadership,” said Nani.
Those qualities would certainly be welcomed at United and Nani would no doubt cheer on Amorim as he prepares to make the move from Sporting to Manchester.
How Manchester United’s ex-Sporting stars have performed for the Red Devils
Amorim’s expected move to Manchester sees him join a number of previous imports from Lisbon.
Cristiano Ronaldo is the most famous having become a global superstar off the back of joining United from Sporting in 2003.
United tried to repeat the trick by signing Nani, who may not have hit Cristiano’s heights but was certainly loved by United fans.
| Appearances | Goals | Assists | |
| Cristiano Ronaldo (2003-2009) | 346 | 145 | 64 |
| Nani (2007-2015) | 230 | 41 | 70 |
| Bruno Fernandes (2020-present) | 246 | 79 | 71 |
Current captain Bruno Fernandes arrived from Sporting in January 2020 and it would be remiss of us to miss out Marcos Rojo.
The Argentinian defender arrived from Sporting in 2014 and became something of a cult hero at Old Trafford.
The move has worked out well for those before Amorim and United’s expected new boss will be hoping to make a success of it himself.
