Ralf Rangnick spent six months as Manchester United’s interim manager, with his reputation taking a hit after struggling to get positive results.
Following on from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s dismissal in 2021, Ralf Rangnick was appointed as an interim manager for the remainder of the 2021/22 season.
Rangnick arrived with a reputation for turning things around for football clubs, but he was unable to succeed at Old Trafford.
The German coach was promised a consultancy role for another two years but left at the end of his first season due to his commitments as head coach of the Austrian national team.
This week, Rangnick was hospitalised due to an infection he picked up following ankle surgery. He is expected to return to the Austrian dugout in the near future.

Oliver Glasner boss hails ‘amazing’ Ralf Rangnick
With a win percentage of 37%, Rangnick has one of the worst records from any United manager.
The German was credited for being honest in his role at the time, having recommended several transfer targets to United, but he didn’t have the time to plan for the future.
Rangnick’s results also made it easier for United to let him focus on the Austria national team.
However, Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner believes there are misconceptions about Rangnick.
In an interview with Stadium Astro, Glasner was asked about Rangnick’s role as Austria manager and whether people are wrong to undermine his qualities.
Glasner said: “Oh yes, absolutely, he proved it so many times and now with Austria he’s doing a great job with such enthusiasm again.
“I hope we qualify for the World Cup, it will be the first time in 28 years for Austria.
“He’s not just a manager, he’s a Sporting Director, there’s a clear way of how he sees football and how he wants to play football. I think when I say this, these are the most important skills of being a manager, how you want to play and what players you need for this and how you teach them.
“He also understands people, he showed this at Hoffenheim with Brazilian and African players, he’s just an amazing manager and a great guy.”
Rangnick’s record since leaving Man Utd
Rangnick has taken charge of the Austria national team in 38 matches since leaving United.
Austria won 22 of those matches, drawing seven and losing nine.
Under Rangnick, Austria is in a strong position to qualify for the World Cup, after winning all of their qualifying matches to date.
Their biggest competition in Group H is Bosnia and Herzegovina, after winning four of their five qualifiers, but Austria have played one game less.
It would be an incredible achievement if Rangnick were to lead Austria to the World Cup finals next summer.
