Noussair Mazraoui addresses the possibility of playing out of position due to Luke Shaw’s injury

Manchester United’s latest signing, by about 15 minutes, Noussair Mazraoui has opened up about his move to Old Trafford.

Luke Shaw’s unreliability through injury last season meant Manchester United were on the lookout for defensive reinforcements in the full-back areas so they could deal better with the absence of the English left-back.

United completed the double deal of Matthijs De Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui earlier this week with the pair set to cost the Red Devils around £50 million all in all which is a great deal.

Mazraoui’s versatility may be called on sooner than expected with Luke Shaw picking up yet another injury for the Red Devils. The Moroccan, who has played at left-back, may be called upon to fulfill that role again.

Noussair Mazraoui comments on playing at left-back for United

During the struggle of last season, United sometimes had to rely on Sofyan Amrabat to play at left-back but the signing of the Moroccan should end any chance of makeweights being played at left-back.

Speaking to the United website, the former Ajax defender has spoken about his ability to play on both sides ahead of the Red Devils’ opening game of the season against Fulham tonight.

“I think I’m a player who adapts fast,” he said. “I’m quite good under pressure. When they press high, I can find a way to come out of the press. Attacking-wise, I like to really support the winger.

“That’s the guy who has to score and give the assists, so I try to support him the best I can in both ways, in defending ways and also on the ball.”

Mazraoui could be key for United during opening weeks of the season

Having Mazraoui on the left and Diogo Dalot, who was one of United’s players of the season last year, on the right, this could be an interesting wing-back pairing.

United sold Aaron Wan-Bissaka to West Ham this month for around £15 million and have sacrificed that defensive solidity for a player in Mazraoui who has brilliant technical ability and can support the winger effectively.

In fact, the Moroccan could form an interesting partnership with Marcus Rashford, who looked sharp during pre-season.

With Shaw’s fitness becoming a nice bonus rather than something you can rely on, Mazraoui could play a key role for the Red Devils, certainly until the September international break and possibly beyond.
