In the least surprising news of the 2024/25 season, Luke Shaw has picked up an injury before the season has even kicked off.
Luke Shaw missed Manchester United’s pre-season tour after his involvement at Euro 2024. He started only the final, having missed most of the preceding games due to injury.
He was then pictured in a small training session back at Carrington, before being noticeably absent from the build-up to the Community Shield.
United fans expressed frustration at Shaw’s absence, hoping it was just a precaution and that he would return for the opening Premier League fixture. He won’t.

New Luke Shaw injury blow
Luke Shaw is injured again. Manchester United confirmed the news with an announcement, just 72 hours ahead of the league opener.
United confirm: “Luke Shaw will miss the opening games of the Premier League season due to a calf injury sustained at the start of pre-season training.
“He is working hard on his rehabilitation with a view to being available after the first international break.”
This means Luke Shaw will miss Premier League games against Fulham, Brighton and Liverpool, before looking to make his return potentially on September 14 against Southampton. This is a game Rasmus Hojlund is also aiming for.
Luke Shaw injuries are becoming a farce
One thing is a non-negotiable, Luke Shaw dare not declare himself available for England in the early September break.
Shaw suffered four separate injuries during the 2023/24 season, with his last game for Manchester United in February.
Despite this, he made the England squad and spent the summer pushing to get back in time to make an impact at the tournament.
Now, immediately upon returning to Manchester United training, Luke Shaw has got injured again.
It is a farcical situation, Shaw cannot be trusted to be available. Shaw has a horrendous injury record, as he enters the 11th season of his Manchester United career.
Tyrell Malacia is also out injured for another couple of months, and United begin this season in similar circumstances to the last.
Lisandro Martinez started out of position at left-back in the Community Shield, while new signing Noussair Mazraoui can also play there, as can Diogo Dalot. Youngster Harry Amass is also available.
With the transfer window still open, there is still a chance United strengthen at left-back before the deadline.
