Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is under serious pressure after a horrendous defeat to Liverpool.
Losing to Liverpool in 2018 was the final straw for Jose Mourinho’s reign.
This loss was far worse, with the manner of the defeat downright embarrassing. The loss was United’s worst ever home defeat to Liverpool.
Solskjaer’s future will be subject to more intense debate than ever, and many supporters are of the view that it is simply time up for the manager.
So if Solskjaer was to be fired, now or in a few weeks, who would his replacement be?
Here is a look at four contenders for the Manchester United hotseat…
Zinedine Zidane
Zinedine Zidane has won the Champions League three times. That should speak for itself.
The Frenchman is also available instantly after leaving Real Madrid in the summer.
Zidane knows how to get the best out of Cristiano Ronaldo, having worked with him before, along with Raphael Varane, who shared their Champions League success.
One reason against, is Zidane’s lack of familiarity with the Premier League.
Antonio Conte
Antonio Conte is the second manager on this list who is instantly available.
Unlike Zidane, Conte has a proven Premier League track record, winning the title with Chelsea.
Conte’s most recent act in management was to win the Serie A title with Inter Milan.
The Italian has been criticised for being a short-term manager, and also in the against column, is a poor Champions League record.
Erik Ten Haag
Ajax boss Erik Ten Haag is the man of the moment. The Dutchman’s Ajax side are one of the most in-form teams in Europe.
Ten Haag’s teams play with a clearly defined attacking style and recently beat Dortmund 4-0.
The challenge for United is that Ten Haag is very unlikely to quit on Ajax midway through the season.
If United want him, the club will have to be patient and wait until the end of the season, which may not be possible.
Brendan Rodgers
Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers could be destined for bigger and better after winning the FA Cup with the Foxes last season.
Rodgers has built a very strong squad with Leicester and could be capable of more.
He once quit Celtic mid-season for the Leicester job, so it is conceivable he would walk away if United came calling.
His past spell as Liverpool boss could count against him, as might also a lack of European pedigree.
