One Manchester United player’s career has headed in an upward trajectory for Ruben Amorim.
Things have not been going to plan for Manchester United over the past few months.
Ruben Amorim’s system is unsurprisingly taking time to click, despite some positive signs. These struggles were forecasted by Amorim, with the head coach warning fans of the impending storm which has since swept over Old Trafford.
United have had some positives, such as the draw with Liverpool or beating Arsenal in the FA Cup. However most recently, United succumbed to a 3-1 loss against Brighton.
After the horrendous form in December, January was better but fixture congestion has caught up with United as Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte have looked increasingly lethargic in recent weeks.
In particular, Mainoo has been disappointing and needs to be rested – which will open the door up for Toby Collyer to step into Amorim’s side.

Phil Bardsley admits he’s very impressed with Toby Collyer
Collyer has been impressing over the past few weeks with cameos for Amorim. Rio Ferdinand has been one pundit raving about Collyer, as he bids to make up for lost time and establish himself in the United first team.
Another who has had their eye caught by Collyer is MUTV pundit Phil Bardsley, who raved about the 21-year-old during open training on Wednesday.
“I’ve been impressed with Collyer this year I must admit, he’s got a good size to him, his attitude is impeccable and he looks like he’s got a bright future at the club. We’ve seen him over the past couple of games making a few appearances, I think the manager has huge trust in him.
“That’s one of the key qualities that you need as a Man United player. It’s the character that you show in adversity. He’s certainly got the courage to play for Man United, hopefully, he keeps learning and progressing. He’s a player I’m looking forward to seeing more of him in a red shirt.”
Collyer could get his big chance to start in midfield this week against Rangers in the Europa League – and it is long overdue.
Manchester United have needed Collyer to step up
Collyer was seen as one of England’s very best young midfielders when he joined United, and finally, under Amorim, he is getting the chance to showcase why this is.
Erik ten Hag gave Collyer his backing, yet the Dutchman failed to give United’s young midfielder the chance he desperately needed. Collyer’s only start under Ten Hag was at left-back, but under Amorim, he has been establishing himself as the third-choice midfielder.
Collyer’s new role at United is being a difference maker and has proven himself capable of doing a variety of jobs for Amorim’s midfield.
Having Collyer step up is exactly what United have needed and has taken the reliance off Casemiro – which can only be a good thing considering his persistent struggles over the past year.
