Morten Hjulmand has three key strengths which make him a perfect signing for Man United this summer

Ruben Amorim could yet return to his former side Sporting Lisbon to raid them for midfielder Morten Hjulmand.

With Manchester United set to announce a £71m deal for Bryan Mbeumo imminently, Ineos can finally move on to landing other targets this window.

According to Fabrizio Romano, United want to sign a striker next, but the 0-0 draw against Leeds United in pre-season exposed a bigger problem.

Ruben Amorim bemoaned United’s midfield, suggesting there was a “lack of pace” in the centre of the pitch.

It is known that Amorim wants to sign an “athletic” midfielder, and it seems his ideal target could be his former captain Morten Hjulmand.

Morten Hjulmand fits the profile Ruben Amorim wants at Man United

Amorim looks set to miss out on a reunion with Viktor Gyokeres, with the Swedish striker closing in on a move to Arsenal.

But United are keeping tabs on Hjulmand, meaning Amorim could be reunited with one of his former Sporting stars.

In Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo, Amorim has two very talented central midfielders who want to progress the ball and unlock defences, but United seem to be missing a controlling midfielder who can dictate the pace of a game.

That is what Amorim would want from Hjulmand, and WhoScored have outlined the Danish midfielder’s biggest strengths and weaknesses.

They claim Hjulmand is “very strong” in his passing ability, ranking among the best midfielders in Europe. On top of that, he is ranked as “strong” in tackling and long-range shooting.

His only weakness is discipline having picked up a total of 16 yellow cards last season.

Ruben Amorim adored Morten Hjulmand at Sporting

Amorim brought Hjulmand to Sporting in 2023 and named him as club captain after his first season in Portugal.

Amorim ‘loves’ Hjulmand as a player and developed a close bond with him in Lisbon, trusting him to lead a new-look side.

Now at United, Amorim needs a profile like Hjulmand, and he could be made available this summer, although he has a release clause of £69.5 million.

Hjulmand is a perfect Casemiro replacement, and with the Brazilian set to leave Old Trafford upon the expiration of his contract next season, it makes sense for Ineos to plan ahead.

He could form a strong partnership with the likes of Manuel Ugarte, Fernandes and Mainoo in midfield and calm Amorim’s concerns about a lack of control.
