Manchester United fans were all on the same wavelength over a player who was “covering so many spaces” under Ruben Amorim in the Lyon match on Thursday.

The Red Devils resumed their Europa League campaign in France with their trip to the Parc Olympique Lyonnais to face Lyon in the quarter-finals.

Manchester United blew a late lead over Lyon and the Red Devils had to settle for a 2-2 draw in the first leg of their last-eight clash in the Europa League.

Thiago Almada opened the scoring in the 25th minute after an Andre Onana howler allowed the Lyon player to score from a free-kick at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais.

However, Ruben Amorim’s men were able to rally back in the first half of injury time after Leny Yoro buried a stunning header past Lucas Perri from close range.

United finally took the lead in the 88th minute of the contest after Red Devils striker Joshua Zirkzee came off the bench and beat Lucas Perri with a superb header.

The Red Devils’ lead only lasted minutes on Thursday after another costly Andre Onana mistake allowed Rayan Cherki to score in the second half of injury time.

United and Lyon’s 2-2 Europa League result in the first leg in France will now be settled in the return leg of the quarter-final tie at Old Trafford on 17th April.

Man Utd fans’ reaction to Mason Mount’s cameo performance vs Lyon in the Europa League after Ruben Amorim turned to the player

Mason Mount returned to Manchester United first-team action after the March international break following a period on the sidelines in his injury-hit season.

Ruben Amorim has been easing Mason Mount back into the United team this month and the 26-year-old former Chelsea ace has been picking up first-team minutes.

The 40-year-old United manager turned to Mount in the 72nd minute and brought the ex-England star on for Manuel Ugarte for the remainder of the Lyon match.

United fans on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, praised the Red Devils No 7 for his steady cameo in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-finals.

One X user argued: “Mason Mount, it’s nearly as critical as getting Luke Shaw fit and staying fit to this system; we have to find a way of getting Mount in this side along with Mainoo! Mainoo, Mount [and] Bruno [Fernandes] behind a top [No] 9 [would be a] huge difference.”

“A fit Mason Mount in this system would be a game-changer,” another United fan said.

Someone else added: “If Mount can get a run of games together, he could bits in this system.”

While a fourth posted: “Mount is actually giving us some fresh air on the pitch; if he becomes less injury prone, he’s an asset in the Amorim system.”

A fifth Red Devils supporter commented: “Mount fits well with the system. Allows Bruno to play centrally. Just stay fit, [he] and Amad [Diallo] would be great options as [No] 10s.”

“Ever since Mason Mount came on, he has been covering so many spaces,” somebody else tweeted.

Another claimed: “Mason Mount looks fully fit to me, or as fit as Mason gets anyway, he needs to be in our starting XI now.”

And an eighth fan suggested: “Mason Mount is an absolutely floor-raiser for this team. Muppets [that] write him off for injuries are nuts; quality, quality player [is] so needed.”

Ruben Amorim breaks his silence on Andre Onana’s howlers in Man Utd’s 2-2 Europa League draw with Lyon

Speaking after the match at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais, Amorim defended United No 1 Andre Onana after his two big errors in the 2-2 Europa League draw.

“[It is] important to focus on the next game for the league and then think about the second leg against Lyon,” he told TNT Sports, as per BBC Sport.

“When one player has a mistake, all the team has a mistake so we continue like that.”

United now return to Premier League action on Sunday afternoon with their visit to St James’ Park to face Newcastle, with kick-off slated for 4:30pm UK time.
