Michael Carrick refuses to underestimate Mohamed Salah-less Liverpool

Michael Carrick spoke highly of Mohamed Salah ahead of Manchester United’s meeting with Liverpool, but refused to admit whether he is happy that the Egyptian star will miss the trip to Old Trafford.

With four games left to play, Manchester United could clinch Champions League qualification this week. A win over Liverpool achieves that, but Arne Slot’s side also has aspirations to book a place in Europe’s most prestigious competition.

United beat Liverpool 2-1 when the two teams met at Anfield in October. That means the Red Devils can do a Premier League double over their rivals for the first time in 10 years.

Liverpool will be without talisman Mohamed Salah, but they will need to get used to that because they won’t have him next season.

Michael Carrick hails Liverpool star Mohamed Salah

One of the biggest headlines going into the game is that Salah will miss his final potential trip to Old Trafford.

Salah has an impressive record against United, and his injury comes at a bad time for Liverpool, especially with the Egypt international set to leave the club this summer.

When asked about Salah, Carrick stressed that he has the utmost respect for the Liverpool talisman, saying: “Yeah, full respect to what he’s achieved. It’s been tough for us at times to watch him be against us, but a lot of respect for what he’s done for Liverpool, and the league in terms of the level of performance he’s produced for so long.

“Everything does come to an end at some stage and he’s obviously not involved in the game, but we wish him all the best for whatever’s next.”

Carrick refused to answer whether he would rather be facing Salah or not on Sunday. Instead, he replied: “I’m not going to say that, because they’ve got some good players!

“They’ve got a very good squad and some good individuals, so I won’t be going that far. But listen, he’s been one of the best to have graced this great league for so long. Full credit to him for that.”

Mohamed Salah rarely misses games against Man Utd

Salah was rarely injured during his time at Liverpool.

As a result, he only missed one game against United in 2019.

The game finished 1-1 at Old Trafford as Salah was forced to miss out with an ankle injury.

Marcus Rashford scored the only goal for United that day.
