Michael Carrick is now officially set to lead Manchester United into the 2026/27 campaign, and so attention can turn to the transfer business.

With Casemiro already playing his last match, the search for a new midfielder this summer is on for Manchester United and newly appointed head coach Michael Carrick.

It won’t be about finding a like-for-like Casemiro replacement, with Carrick likely to mould United’s system differently and more sustainably than what we have seen since January.

Now, the guessing is over regarding what kind of midfielder is wanted, with Carrick explaining exactly what he wants from a midfielder.

Michael Carrick outlines the demands he has for any possible midfield signing this summer

United are expected to sign two new midfielders at the very least this summer. The result of this has seen United weighing up several options to be signed.

But now, speaking on Sky Sports, Carrick has explained what it takes to be a United midfielder, and therefore what he is looking for in a possible signing.

“To be a midfielder at Manchester United, you need to have an element of composure, an element of expression.

“You’ve got to be positive. You’ve got to have an element of athleticism to deal with fast attacks and how we want to play the game.

“In the end, you want to be creating excitement, you know, as well as having to defend. So, my answer is pretty much everything, really.”

Carrick has described multiple players that United have been linked with, and also himself during his prime.

Manchester United need to give Carrick what he wants

The midfielder that Carrick has described isn’t an unattainable target, with the current shortlist involving multiple suitable names.

Elliot Anderson looks too expensive for United, but he absolutely ticks Carrick’s demands of a midfield player. While United’s interest in Mateus Fernandes makes complete sense, given his suitability for the requirements.

Ineos have appointed Carrick, but there isn’t a point in doing this unless they plan to give him the profiles and players that he wants to bring his view of football to life.

Backing the manager when things are going well has always been a problem for United over the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.

Think Jose Mourinho getting Fred, a young Diogo Dalot, and Lee Grant after finishing second. Or how Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s getting Donny van de Beek, Facundo Pellistri, Alex Telles, and others. Even Erik ten Hag getting Mason Mount, Rasmus Hojlund, and Andre Onana after finishing third.

If United recruit as well as last summer, Carrick could be set up for major success next season. But the club needs to put the money where their mouths are.

It could be a summer that brings United back, finally.
