Matthijs de Ligt’s performance caught the eye of Bruno Fernandes after Manchester United’s sensational 2-1 Premier League win over Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.
Liverpool hosted Manchester United on the weekend and Arne Slot’s Reds fell to their third consecutive Premier League defeat in the 2025-26 campaign.
United delivered the first blow of the contest after Bryan Mbeumo was played through and he lifted the ball over Liverpool shot-stopper Giorgi Mamardashvili.
Following Bryan Mbeumo’s opener in the second minute of the tie, Liverpool finally pulled themselves level in the second half thanks to a tap-in from Cody Gakpo.
However, Liverpool’s equaliser in the 78th minute was short-lived and United took the lead again in the 84th minute through a headed effort from Harry Maguire.

Matthijs de Ligt started Sunday’s 2-1 win alongside Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw in the backline and the Manchester United trio all impressed against Liverpool.
The 26-year-old Netherlands international played the full 90 minutes at Anfield, with De Ligt putting in a commanding display as the right-sided centre-back for United.
Bruno Fernandes had his own impact on the Premier League match after his sublime first-time cross picked out England defender Maguire for United’s winner.
De Ligt took to social media after United’s 2-1 result against Liverpool and the former Ajax and Bayern Munich defender sent a powerful message to United fans.
Posting to his Instagram followers, the United star wrote: “Special game, special win!”
Fernandes was spotted in the comments of De Ligt’s Instagram post and the 31-year-old United captain responded to his teammate with a series of flexing emojis.

Ruben Amorim has had the pressure slightly eased on his shoulders after the Red Devils finally notched up back-to-back wins under his reign as United manager.
“Every day is special [as United boss] but this was a very special win,” he said, as per Manchester United’s official website.
“To see our fans singing during the game, in a moment that the biggest rival are champions, on their field and at their stadium, this win is all about our fans and the spirit of the team because I believe we can play so much better.”
Ruben Amorim added: “We will analyse the game in the same way we analyse the other ones, try to see the good things and bad things.
“But, for me, the togetherness they [the players] showed during this game, that is special for me.”
United are ninth in the Premier League table and the Red Devils are now two points behind defending champions Liverpool, with the Reds currently tied for third place.
