Matheus Cunha was back in the starting line-up for Manchester United against Liverpool, and the decision paid off for Ruben Amorim.

Competition for places in Manchester United’s attack is heating up, and Ruben Amorim now has options across the three forward positions.

United have four top-class forwards, which means there is not currently a settled starting front three, with places up for grabs.

Matheus Cunha earned his start against Liverpool with actions

Cunha was magnificent against Liverpool, putting in a performance that oozed quality and class, which should be massively exciting for the club to see.

Bruno Fernandes even hailed Cunha’s role in the win, with his determination, dribbling, and IQ all playing a big role in United holding on for the victory.

However, it was a shock to see Cunha starting, having been with the Brazil squad in Japan earlier in the week, but now Laurie Whitwell has explained for The Athletic exactly how the number 10 earned his place in the starting line-up.

The report claimed that despite only returning to England on Wednesday and being given extended leave until Friday, Cunha was at Carrington on Thursday for individual recovery work.

This was a big factor in him earning a start against Liverpool, getting him back into the fold quicker, and also staying match fit. Casemiro did the same, which explains why he was in the starting line-up as well.

Matheus Cunha is an excellent example for Manchester United teammates

Cunha’s commitment to United and the professional manner in which he has applied himself at Old Trafford is something that should be admired.

Cunha is a big upgrade on Marcus Rashford in this aspect, and also on the pitch under Amorim, with the Englishman not applying himself ideally in recent years.

In addition, Cunha has answered the doubts around his work rate for United, being the hard-working forward that Amorim demands.

Long-term, Cunha has everything to be a future captain, and this just proves it. He has also made himself undroppable for United vs Brighton this coming weekend.
