Manchester United's name is being used again by Barcelona

At this point most Manchester United supporters like to think they know the difference between a transfer rumour with some credibility, and one which is a total dud.

And reports linking United with a move for Barcelona’s Nelson Semedo are complete nonsense.

United’s name was thrown into the mix by Catalan newspaper Sport, often seen as Barcelona’s mouthpiece in a similar way to how Marca represents the Real Madrid perspective.

Sport claim Manchester United are the most prominent club to enquire with Barcelona over signing Semedo.

Lower down the report, it is claimed Semedo has rejected a new contract to stay at Barcelona.

His current deal runs until 2022, and contains a highly overpriced £88 million release clause.

This contract rejection gives Barcelona motive to try and cash in, and no club generates interest quite like Manchester United.

Semedo’s agent is Jorge Mendes, who knows precisely how to play the market, the rumour mill, and use United to drum up interest in his client.

Not required

Semedo plays in a position where Manchester United definitely do not need to spend; right-back.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka has the position sewn up as his own, and could do for the next decade.

Diogo Dalot and Ethan Laird also provide depth at the position, and Brandon Williams played there too in the win over LASK.

There is no need at all to buy a right-back for a third successive summer, and the Nelson Semedo rumour is one which can go in the bin.
