Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo is set to earn a pay rise in his contract, according to reports.
Erik ten Hag started Kobbie Mainoo against Everton at Goodison Park and from then on, the teenager has been in and around the starting lineup.
The English midfielder has gone from strength to strength in the United first team but did look rather overwhelmed during the 1-0 defeat to Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United.
Despite this, the teenager has been a breath of fresh air in the United midfield with his calmness and composure being so impressive that even Roy Keane was pleased with his performances.
Mainoo’s increased terms
According to a report from The Sun, Kobbie Mainoo is set to see his wage increase if he continues to make appearances for the Red Devils.
His current deal at Old Trafford, which he signed in February, expires in 2027 but the Red Devils do have an option to extend that contract by a further year.
That contract included a series of incremental pay increases according to the report, one of which will see his salary rocket to £20,000 when his first-team appearances hit double figures.
He is already halfway to making 10 appearances and so there wouldn’t be much surprise if he completed that milestone towards the end of this month.
United’s eagerness to not repeat mistakes
The report goes on to say that the Red Devils are keen on attempting to keep their academy players, who are performing well in the first team, grounded.
Alejandro Garnacho has come into the side over the past 12 months and has certainly looked grounded in the United first team and the hope is that Mainoo will continue on the same trajectory.
The Red Devils have made mistakes in the past when it comes to handing young players big contracts in an attempt to keep them at the Old Trafford club.
Adnan Januzaj was reportedly rewarded with a new £50,000 a week contract at the club when he broke through under David Moyes, according to the report, before being moved on by Louis Van Gaal after failing to impress the Dutchman.
Mainoo, however, seems to have an old head on his young shoulders, keeping him grounded doesn’t look to be a problem.
