Manchester United will hold training ground friendly match next week

Manchester United played a friendly behind closed doors at Old Trafford between their league meetings with Leeds and Southampton last week.

Solskjaer admitted after that draw at St Mary’s that United are ‘still not 100 percent fit’ and tiredness played a part in that poor performance.

The international break next week will allow United to do some extra fitness work.

And the Athletic report that they have organised a friendly at Carrington next week to help with that.

They report that one of the players United want to help get back to fitness is Phil Jones.

Jones will apparently not be leaving the club before the end of the transfer window.

He is seen as someone who could be a squad option for Solskjaer, but he needs to get fit.

But he’s not the only player who still needs to tune up. Given the lack of pre-season some of Solskjaer’s squad had, these early weeks of the campaign are almost like pre-season for them.

Who will play for United in the friendly?

All of United’s international stars will be away with their countries, but some big hitters could still play.

Mason Greenwood and Aaron Wan-Bissaka have not been selected by England and should play in the friendly.

Gareth Southgate said it was agreed with United that it’s best for Greenwood to stay with United in the coming weeks.

Perhaps Dean Henderson could continue his comeback with a game, and Juan Mata could also be involved.

Other than that, the match could be a chance for some younger players to impress Solskjaer.

For example, Anthony Elanga shone in the first part of pre-season before an injury hamstrung his progress.

It’s not yet been reported who the match will be against or what day it will take place on.
