Manchester United plan to recall striker Charlie McNeill from his loan spell at Stevenage.
This should not come as a surprise. According to The MEN, Charlie McNeill will be recalled from his loan at the League One side in January, per a break clause in his season long deal.
McNeill, 20, is on the second loan of his career following a stint at Newport County last season.
The loans were arranged after he became the first Manchester United youngster handed a debut by Erik ten Hag in September 2022, as a substitute against Real Sociedad. That remains his singular first team appearance.
McNeill loan so far
Charlie McNeill’s loan spell at Stevenage began pretty well, with a goal on his debut against Leyton Orient in early September.
Since then he has made only two appearances, with the last coming on September 23. At times he has failed to make the bench for Steve Evans’ side.
Stevenage are in the play-offs so have been reluctant to change up their selection, which has been bad news for McNeill, who is desperate to make an impact.
FA Youth Cup winner
The loans have been tough sledding for McNeill, who was Alejandro Garnacho‘s strike partner in the 2022 FA Youth Cup winning squad, scoring five goals along the way.
But while Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo have made the step up from that side to the first team, McNeill’s career has stalled out on loan.
The young striker has an eye for goal, he has netted more than 40 times for Manchester United’s academy teams, and his one goal in three appearances on loan suggests he has something to offer.
It is likely he will head out on loan in the second half of the season to try and get his career moving in an upwards direction.
