Charlie McNeill came off the bench to make his senior Manchester United debut against Real Sociedad.

The Thursday night game was the first time McNeill had been among the substitutes for a competitive game, and it was a big moment for the young striker to get onto the pitch at Old Trafford.

Both he and FA Youth Cup winning teammate Alejandro Garnacho were sent on, tasked with helping United rescue a 1-0 deficit, and while they did not quite make it, their call was a personal achievement.

McNeill, 19, is a regular for United’s under-21s and scored five goals as United won the FA Youth Cup last season.

Nicky Butt sends message to Charlie McNeill

McNeill sent out a message expressing his pure delight at making his Manchester United debut in the Europa League clash.

He said he is prepared to work hard to earn more moments like this in the future.

There were plenty of messages from McNeill’s United academy teammates congratulating him on his milestone, and Treble winner Nicky Butt.

Butt worked as the head of United’s academy, and he congratulated McNeill, reminding him that this proved he ‘eventually’ picked the right club.

McNeill had begun his career at Manchester United, before switching to Manchester City, and then re-signing for United in 2020, while Butt was still involved with the academy.

McNeill has scored more than 40 academy goals in competitive games for United’s academy sides over the past two seasons, including winning the FA Youth Cup.

He is a talented prospect who clearly has caught Erik ten Hag’s eye, becoming the first academy player to be given his debut at the club by the new manager.
