Manchester United say defender Raphael Varane will be out for a few weeks while Lisandro Martinez will miss the rest of the season.
The Athletic reported Varane’s foot injury is currently being assessed by the club’s medical staff.
The report states: “There are concerns his campaign could also be over but the club are hopeful that does not also prove the case.”
Manchester United’s official update says Varane “is expected to be out for a few weeks,” but does not say his season is over.
Worst case scenario
Lisandro Martinez will miss the rest of the season with a metatarsal injury. The club update says: “Lisandro Martinez has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after fracturing a metatarsal bone in his foot.
“However, the Argentinian defender is expected to make a full recovery in time to be ready for the start of next season.”
Erik ten Hag said that Varane had been complaining about his injury for the past two weeks and he has now aggravated it.
The relentless fixture schedule allows little time for rest and Varane has struggled with injuries since joining Manchester United in 2021.
Hopefully we see Varane again this season, but Manchester United will be reluctant to take chances with his fitness now.
United could still play two cup finals, for which Varane may potentially be able to get back for. United have to get there first.
We may see some brighter news later in the month if Varane starts to make good progress. But Martinez’s season is done.
Varane certainly won’t be featuring against Nottingham Forest on Sunday. Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof are expected to stand in, and United may have to rely on them, and Luke Shaw, for the rest of the campaign.
