The full extent of Lisandro Martinez’s injury has been revealed, as it is being reported that he has a fractured fifth metatarsal.
Argentine ESPN journalist Esteban Edul has reported that Martinez has fractured a fifth metatarsal in his right foot.
It remains unclear whether or not it’s best to operate or to allow the bone to heal on its own. The severity of this injury means it is possible this is a season ender.
It comes as a killer blow to United who are still challenging on all fronts. A top four battle, along with the FA Cup semi-final and the second leg of their Europa League tie.

What is a fifth metatarsal fracture
The fifth metatarsal is a long bone on the outside of the foot which also connects to the little toe. Symptoms of the fracture are that it can cause severe pain and swelling.
Therefore, depending on the severity of the fracture, healing time can take anywhere from four to eight weeks and involves wearing a cast.
While a horrible injury, it is better than many fans feared initially as it is not his Achilles.
This return period would leave Martinez‘s return anytime from mid May to early June. There is a possibility he could be fit should United reach the Europa League final in Budapest on May 25th.
He will of course be back for pre-season. But that is little consolation at this point.
