Manchester United will have to cope without Brazilian midfielder Fred for the next two games after Brazilian football authorities triggered a Fifa rule to prevent him from appearing (BBC Sport).
As Fred wasn’t released for international duty, it meant he could be banned for five days after the window ends under the Fifa regulations.
The decision covers 10-14 September, which means that United’s number 17 will miss Cristiano Ronaldo’s homecoming against Newcastle United on Saturday and the club’s first Champions League group stage match against Young Boys on Tuesday.
Fred was well rested
Fred had spent some time away enjoying a holiday in Croatia during the international break.
Following his exploits with his national side at the Copa America in the summer, a little rest would have done him the world of good and recharged the batteries.
But now Ole Gunnar Solskjaer won’t be able to select Fred. The 28-year-old will be able to return against West Ham United on 19th September.
The former Shakhtar Donetsk player has started all three Premier League matches and scored his fifth goal for the club in the opening day 5-1 victory against Leeds United.
Who will replace him?
With Scott McTominay only returning to training earlier this week following groin surgery, the Newcastle game may come too soon for the Scot.
Donny van de Beek and Nemanja Matic are also options to line up alongside Paul Pogba.
