Manchester United’s goal-shy forwards cannot find the net in the Premier League, with Marcus Rashford the only one to score, away at Arsenal.
At Old Trafford, the record is awful. ESPN has highlighted that the last Manchester United forward to score a Premier League goal at Old Trafford was… Jadon Sancho.
Jadon Sancho scored the opening goal in a 2-1 win over Fulham in the final Premier League game of last season, with Bruno Fernandes also on the scoresheet. None of Manchester United’s strikers or wingers have netted a league goal since.
Alejandro Garnacho and Anthony Martial did score at home in the Carabao Cup and Rasmus Hojlund twice in the Champions League, but we are talking Premier League here. Manchester United have played seven Premier League games this season at Old Trafford.
Manager Erik ten Hag has fallen out with Sancho, who is exiled from the squad at present, and now expected to leave the club in January. We certainly hope a Manchester United forward has managed to score a league home goal by then – but nobody expected this to be the case by mid-November.
Manchester United fans react
Manchester United supporters have been left stunned by this eye-opening statistic which shows just how badly the forwards have performed. None of Rasmus Hojlund, Antony, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Alejandro Garnacho et al have managed to hit the back of the net in front of the home fans in matches at home to Wolves, Nottingham Forest, Brighton, Crystal Palace, Brentford, Manchester City, and Luton Town.
Having to go back to May for the last time a forward scored a home goal is one thing. To see it was Jadon Sancho who scored it, certainly asks some questions.
One fan wrote on social media in response to the statistic emerging, “This is embarrassing.”
Another incredulous supporter wrote: “Surely this has to be fake”, with another adding: “This is actually so embarrassing”, and a further comment simply read, “Wow”.
Another fan added: “He’s our best attacker no debate,” which, whether you believe it to be true or not, is useless to United unless he can patch up his differences with the manager.
A different view was held by another supporter who wrote of Sancho: “Doesn’t change the fact that we want him out of the club.”
Defenders bail Manchester United out
Manchester United have had to look elsewhere in the team for goals. Against Brentford it was Scott McTominay who popped up to score twice.
At other times it was defenders, with Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof both scoring winning goals in the Premier League at Old Trafford this season.
United’s goalscoring efforts are now complicated by an injury to Rasmus Hojlund, although he may be back by the team’s next Premier League home game, on December 6 against Chelsea.
