Manchester United eye move for Kaide Gordon

Manchester United are eyeing a move for Derby County wonderkid Kaide Gordon.

The news was reported by Sky Sports and Derbyshire Live. A report in The Mail has also claimed United’s interest.

Derby are in financial trouble at present. Sky Sports claim they are looking to try and solve this by selling their top youth assets, as opposed to first team players.

Special talent

Gordon won Derby’s player of the year award last season and has already played for the first team.

Sky‘s report says Gordon is ‘described by one Premier League club scout as “the best 16-year old in England right now”, Gordon is predominantly an attacker who can operate through the middle or out wide.

Wayne Rooney’s presence as Derby boss could help United’s cause, amid competition from Liverpool. He will be well placed to advise Gordon on a potential move to Old Trafford.

Rooney has been impressed with Gordon, telling Sky: “I brought Kaide up with the first-team initially to train with us for a week to see how he reacted to it, and he was one of the best trainers.

“I kept him with us for a couple of week and he’s been training at the same level if not to a better level to a lot of the other [first-team] players.”

Gordon saw how good United are first hand earlier this season. He could not stop United’s table topping under-18 side running rampant and beating Derby 4-0 back at the end of October.

He showed his quality a fortnight later by scoring a hat-trick as Derby’s under-18s beat Blackburn 5-1. It could even have been more but he was substituted after 54 minutes, after hitting his third goal in the 49th.

His hat-trick came from the right wing, although he has also played on the left this season.

A deal could be done this month

Gordon is an England youth international and Sky Sports report Derby value him at ‘more than double £1 million’.

To land him for £2-3 million would be a steal, especially when you consider how Birmingham City landed more than £20 million from Borussia Dortmund for Jude Bellingham who was the same age, albeit had more Championship experience.

Brexit rules limit the number of foreign players under 18 who can be signed by United and other English clubs. This means there will be more focus on signing top UK talents like Kaide Gordon.

This is the type of deal United should be looking to do, especially with the risk of rivals Liverpool nipping in.
